PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE

2019 (Columbus/Birmingham): Edward Opoku has not yet made an appearance for Crew SC this season. On March 22, he was sent on loan to Birmingham Legion FC of the USL. He made a substitute appearance in a 3-2 win over Louisville City (March 31). Opoku has made 17 appearances (five starts) to date for Birmingham Legion FC, scoring two goals and providing two assists. He did not make an appearance in the 2019 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup.

2018 (Columbus):Edward Opoku  made six appearances (one start as a right midfielder) for Crew SC this season. On April 26, he was sent on loan to USL side Saint Louis FC. Opoku started in an international friendly at home against Costa Rican side Deportivo Saprissa (July 3). He made his MLS regular-season debut in a home match against Orlando City SC (July 21), coming on as a substitute in the 68th minute. The following week, he made a substitute appearance in a road match against the New York Red Bulls (July 28). He made his third consecutive substitute appearance in a home match against the Houston Dynamo (August 11). He made his first regular-season start in a road match against Atlanta United FC (August 19). He did not make an appearance in a road match against the Montreal Impact after being listed as questionable with a left lower leg injury. Opoku made a substitute appearance in a road match against Orlando City SC (October 21). Opoku made one appearance in the 2018 U.S. Open Cup, coming on as a substitute for Niko Hansen in the 65th minute of a 2018 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Fourth Round home match against the Chicago Fire (June 6).
 

 

COLLEGE CAREER

Opoku attended the University of Virginia from 2015-2017, making 53 appearances (all starts) while registering 16 goals and nine assists. Opoku was named to the USC Second Team All-American in 2016 and 2017, as well as to the USC First Team All-South Region in 2016. Prior to attending the University of Virginia, he went to high school at Millbrook School and was named the MVP of the 2014 High School All-American Game.

Opoku loves volunteering during his free time, especially working with kids. He has his own hashtag #BeHappy. Opoku’s favorite TV shows are Grey’s Anatomy, Criminal Minds, Prison Break and The Walking Dead. He loves listening to all types of music, including Ghanaian music. Opoku’s favorite band is The Lumineers. Growing up, he was a Chelsea fan. His favorite place to go to in the world is Australia. Opoku’s favorite dish is jollof rice, a traditional Ghanaian meal. Growing up, he looked up to players like fellow Ghanaian David Accam, Chelsea midfielder Eden Hazard, and Brazilian player Robinho. Opoku previously played with teammate Mohammed Abu when they were both at the Right to Dream Academy. He speaks English and Twi.
