Columbus (2020): Kempin did not make any regular-season appearances for Crew SC. He was sent on loan to USL Championship side San Diego Loyal SC on March 6, 2020 and has since made 11 appearances (all starts) so far for San Diego, notably earning five shutouts.
2019 (Columbus): Kempin made three appearances (three starts) for Crew SC. He made his 2019 regular-season debut in a road contest against Minnesota United FC (May 18). Kempin was recently on loan with the USL Championship side Hartford Athletic and made two appearances (all starts) on April 13 and 17. Kempin returned to the starting XI for Crew SC during a home match against Sporting Kansas City (June 23). He made two appearances (two starts) and posted one shutout during the 2019 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup against Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC (June 11) and Atlanta United (June 18). Kempin was the recipient of the 2019 Kirk Urso Award.
2018 (Columbus): Kempin made five starts for Crew SC in 2018. He was the backup goalkeeper for Zack Steffen in a road match against the Philadelphia Union (March 17). He made his regular season debut against D.C. United (March 24) and captured his first win with Crew SC. He has served as the backup goalkeeper from a home match against Vancouver Whitecaps FC (March 31) to a road match against Sporting Kansas City (May 27). Kempin started in home matches against Toronto FC (June 2) and the New York Red Bulls (June 9), recording a combined four saves. Kempin served as the backup goalkeeper for Steffen in a home match against Atlanta United FC (June 13). He returned to the starting lineup and made three saves in a road match against Los Angeles FC (June 23), and he made three saves in a home match against Real Salt Lake (June 30). He started in an international friendly at home against Costa Rican side Deportivo Saprissa (July 3), and he served as the backup goalkeeper for Zack Steffen in consecutive matches from a road match against the LA Galaxy (July 7) to a home match against Minnesota United FC (October 28). Kempin served as the backup goalkeeper for Logan Ketterer in a 2018 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Fourth Round home match against the Chicago Fire (June 6)
2017 (LA Galaxy): Kempin spent the 2017 season with the LA Galaxy ahead of the 2017 MLS season. During his time with the Galaxy, he made seven regular-season appearances (all starts), registering two shutouts and 27 saves. The goalkeeper also made six regular-season appearances (all starts) with the LA Galaxy II, the Galaxy’s United Soccer League side, recording two clean sheets and 32 saves.
2010-2016 (Sporting KC): Kempin signed with Sporting Kansas City as the club’s first Homegrown Player on August of 2010 at the age of 17. During his time there, Kempin made seven regular-season appearances (all starts), registering 11 saves. Kempin made his Sporting KC debut in a 3-2 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup win over Orlando City SC (May 29, 2012). In 2016, Kempin made 12 appearances (all starts) for Swope Park Rangers, Sporting KC’s USL team, registering three shutouts and 33 saves.
INTERNATIONAL EXPERIENCE
A United States youth international, Kempin has represented the United States at the Under-14, U-17, U-20 and U-23 levels. Most recently, he played for the United States Under-23s, featuring for the U.S. U-23 side in a friendly against Brazil on November 11, 2015. That same year, he was named to the United States Men’s National Team roster for the first time in his career to take part in manager Jurgen Klinsmann’s January Camp.
PERSONAL
Kempin’s family includes his father Vance, his mom Julie, and his two siblings (Brandon and Katherine). He also has a dog (Lhasapoo) named Chewie. Kempin’s favorite foods include Asian cuisine and breakfast foods. During his free time, Kempin enjoys spending time outdoors. He also enjoys reading books, particularly motivational books. Kempin enjoys watching movies, but he likes too many to pick a favorite one. He has a wide musical taste that goes from country music to EDM, encompassing musicians like the Chainsmokers and Sam Hunt. In addition to soccer, Kempin enjoys watching college basketball. Growing up, he looked up to goalkeepers Kasey Keller and former Crew SC player William Hesmer. Kempin also plays video games, particularly the Call of Duty and FIFA franchises. He speaks English as well as some Spanish and Portuguese.
