Up next for Columbus Crew SC goalkeeper Zack Steffen? A nomination for U.S. Soccer's 2018 Male Player of the Year.
The 23-year-old netminder, who recorded a Club-record 525 minutes of consecutive shutout play between April 28 to June 13, has made five starts in goal as part of six total appearances, tying the record for most National Team appearances by a goalkeeper in his debut year.
The MNT went 2-2-2 in matches in which Steffen made an appearance, including a 2-2-1 mark when he started. In 495 minutes of playing time, Steffen totaled 18 saves for a goals-against average of 1.27, the lowest of any MNT goalkeeper with a minimum of two appearances this year.
Additionally, Steffen recorded two shutouts, headlined by a 1-0 victory over rival Mexico in a friendly on Sept. 11, 2018. Steffen made three saves in that match and marked the first shutout over El Tri since April 15, 2015.
Votes for U.S. Soccer Male Player of the Year awards are collected from respective National Team coaches, National Team players who have earned a cap in 2018, members of the U.S. Soccer Board of Directors, U.S. Soccer Athletes' Council, American soccer league (MLS and USL) head coaches, select media members and former players and administrators.
