Marc Nicholls — Technical Director

Marc Nicholls was appointed Columbus Crew Technical Director in January 2022. A long-time coaching educator with previous experience on the MLS Player Development Sub-Committee and the Education Department at U.S. Soccer, Nicholls has more than 25 years of experience at the professional and youth levels. In his current role, Nicholls works hand-in-hand with General Manager Issa Tall to drive roster strategy and implement the “One Club” methodology across all levels of the organization. He additionally provides oversight of the player personnel department including scouting and recruitment, performance and player engagement.

In 2024, Columbus reached the Concacaf Champions Cup Final for the first time in its history and claimed the Leagues Cup 2024 trophy. With those accomplishments, the Crew became the first MLS club to play in three major tournament finals in a span of nine months, sparked by their 2023 MLS Cup title. Additionally, since Nicholls joined the Club, Crew 2 secured the 2022 MLS NEXT Pro Cup and the 2023 MLS NEXT Pro Eastern Conference Championship.

This past offseason, Nicholls played a central role in the global search that resulted in Henrik Rydström being named the ninth full-time head coach in Club history. Rydström brings 10 years of coaching experience, including seven as a head coach in Sweden following a 24-year playing career, and guided Malmö FF to back-to-back Allsvenskan titles (2023, 2024) and a Swedish Cup victory (2023–24), completing the club’s first domestic double since 1989. Nicholls’ also provided critical support when the Club hired Wilfried Nancy as head coach prior to the 2023 season.

Prior to the start of the 2026 campaign, the Club’s transactions included the elevation of Crew personnel, including three Homegrown signings – forward Chase Adams and defenders Quinton Elliot and Owen Presthus – and draft picks goalkeeper Luke Pruter and midfielder Zach Zengue signing First Team deals. The three Academy promotions bring the Club’s Homegrown contracts to 27, including eight since Nicholls came to Columbus. In 2025, eight players on the Crew’s First Team roster received senior national team call-ups, while 14 Academy products earned call-ups for their respective youth national teams.

Under Nicholls’ leadership, Crew 2 reached the Eastern Conference Championship for the third consecutive season in 2024 despite a continued reduction in average roster age. The Crew Academy was named the 2023 MLS Mark Abbott Club Awards Academy of the Year, and seven players have signed Homegrown contracts since 2024 (Taha Habroune, Cole Mrowka, Stanislav Lapkes, Tristan Brown, Adams, Elliot and Presthus). Brown (17 years, 156 days), Mrowka (18 years, 39 days) and Habroune (18 years, 68 days) became the second-, third- and fourth-youngest players, respectively, to debut in MLS for Columbus.

The Club recently completed a multimillion-dollar renovation at Historic Crew Stadium to create enhanced Academy performance infrastructure, including a new gym, upgraded meeting and workspaces and dedicated classroom environments — further reinforcing the Club’s commitment to integrated player development.

Nicholls joined the Crew after serving as the Technical Director for MLS expansion side Charlotte FC from 2020-21. He joined Charlotte in January 2020, and during his time there he oversaw the development of players and staff, as well as establishing the Academy program. He also assisted in the identification of key staff hires and scouting for the initial phase of the team roster as the club prepared for its inaugural season in MLS.

Prior to his time with Charlotte FC, Nicholls worked for Seattle Sounders FC from 2013-2020, serving as Academy Director for Sounders Academy before taking on the role of Director of Player Development in 2018. In the position, he oversaw the transition of 15 players from the Sounders Academy into MLS and USL. Nicholls’ previous experience as a Technical Director also includes tenures with Roanoke Star and NC Fusion.

Nicholls also served as a head coach for Sounders Academy from 2013-2014 and the Premier Development League’s Carolina Dynamo from 2011-2013. With North Carolina, Nicholls he the team to South Atlantic Division titles during each of his three seasons with the club (2011, 2012 and 2013). Notably, Nicholls was twice named U.S. Soccer Academy Coach of the Year (2010, 2012).
